Understanding rhetorical conventions and
considerations of professional writing
Learnt of the importance of knowing the audience, which is the primary rhetorical consideration in writing. I can distinguish between grammatical rules and conventions. I understand the rhetorical principles behind the writing of informative, negative and positive messages. I know how to give negative message a positive ‘spin’. I know the importance of design and use of visuals to enhance the rhetoric effect in messages.
I have the requisite knowledge that I can use to write persuasive messages. I understand the idea of ‘rhetorical argument’ and its application in writing persuasive messages. I have an understanding of the limitations of the classical model of rhetorical arguments and know of the alternative Toulmin model, which can be used to develop effective rhetorical arguments. Finally, I now understand the components of formal reports, and the organization and style expected in such reports.
Competence in
finding,
synthesizing
and citing research materials
I am able to find material relevant to a topic under consideration. I know how to use the internet to research for materials. I have developed my synthesis skills and can go through a pile of material to find the common thread and build a coherent argument with a logical flow. I am able to cite material in my work properly to avoid accusations of plagiarism. I have a working knowledge of the different formatting styles, for example MLA, Chicago, APA and Harvard.
I know how, and when to cite ‘in text’ using the different formatting conventions, as well as, how to build a bibliography or reference list page.
Development of skills and strategies of collaborative work
Over the duration of the course, I have learnt how to work with my colleagues effectively. Participating in group discussions and group work helped this development. I learnt that to be able to work collaboratively, I have to utilize certain skills and strategies. In collaborative work, the roles of each member have to be defined to avoid overlap of work. Meetings should be scheduled in advance and members given ample time to prepare for the group work. Time management is important and one must come well prepared in his or her assigned area.
Collaborative work requires tolerance for divergent views and ideas. One must avoid personal disagreements with group members. Disagree with an idea and propose a better one rather than having personal disagreement with the person presenting the idea.
Development of i
ndividual autonomy as a writer
I prepare thoroughly before I begin writing. I carefully read the assigned work and jot down the major points I find appropriate in answering the question. I sound out colleagues on the topic to get their viewpoints and general ideas as to what is required. I carry out research where necessary and record useful material I may use. After this, I synthesize all the materials, and write it down coherently and logically. I proofread to ensure that the work is free of grammatical and logical mistakes.
After writing, I ask friends to have a look at the work and give me their feedback. If there is need for change, I make the necessary changes before submitting the work.
Development and
implementation
of time management skills
I understand that time management is a crucial component in academic work. This is especially so when doing a long-term writing project. The time available for completing project is fixed, and if one does not plan well, the stipulated time may elapse before the project is done. I now understand that one must plan how to utilize time in completing long-term writing project. One of the things I do is to make a timeline. In the timeline, I indicate which parts of the project will be complete by a specific time. I then ensure that the time line is strictly followed. I do not allocate all the time given to the project. I ensure that I leave a good amount of time at the end. This extra time is to cover for any unforeseen circumstances, which may make me not complete the project in the time I allocate for it.
Goals in progress
Significant
growth
towards my professional development

Consequently, I intend to continue working on my areas of weakness and continue improving my skills.
